Geographic center of Europe is located directly in the Carpathians, in the village Dilove in Rakhiv area, close to the famous Carpathian Biosphere Reserve, on the banks of the Tisza river near the border with Romania. In 1885-1887 years the geographers of the Austro- Hungarian Empire was carried out geodetic studies in the Carpathians (the territory of modern Ukraine) for construction of a railroad from Rakhova in Sighet. Incidentally, it was found that Verhnetisyanskoy depression may be the center of Europe. Scientists at the Vienna Imperial-Royal Military Geographical Institute, after a careful study of the place for the proposed geographic center of Europe, and in 1887 was set to mark the historic stone. Latin inscription on the pedestal reads: "Permanent, exact, and eternal place. Center of Europe is set in 1887, the place is measured very precisely using a special apparatus to the scale of meridians and parallels, made in Austria-Hungary. "
