Founded in 1820, the Archaeological Museum in Split is the oldest museum in Croatia. It contains most of the archaeological sites from prehistoric times to the period of Greek colonization of the Adriatic Sea, Roman Empire, early Christianity to the medieval ages.

Archaeological Museum of Split (Arheoloski Muzej) is located north of downtown, the street Zrinsko-Frankopanska , 25. The Archaeological Museum is famous for antique finds from excavations in Diocletian's Palace and the ancient Salons: artfully crafted sarcophagi, mosaics, ceramics and jewelry. It also houses a collection of early Christian relics.

The museum has a large collection of ancient and medieval coins. The museum also has a large library with about 30 thousand books on archeology and history. In 1878 the Archaeological Museum publishes its own magazine "The Bulletin of Archaeology and History."

Home archaeological work in Croatia is connected with the Archaeological Museum. His longtime director Freyn Balik, especially after the First World Congress of Christian Archaeology, held in Split in 1894, has received worldwide fame.
