Sculptural composition titled "Dying Lion", carved into the rock in the center of the city of Lucerne is the first picture of the animal on the monuments in Europe. The writer Mark Twain, while in Lucerne, called the monument "the most mournful and moving piece of rock in the world".

Sami city residents believe that the lion - no doubt, the famous monument on earth, as and write in the guidebooks. Not for nothing the city has also Lowenstrasse and Lowenplatz, respectively, Lion's streets and squares. "Dying Lion" was designed by Danish sculptor Thorvaldsen in 1821. He recalled the heroic death of Swiss Guards who defended King Louis XVI during the storm the Tuileries Palace in 1792, during the French Revolution. Then, the insurgent people interrupted around 1000 Swiss Guards and the nobility of the royal guard. Hewn from solid stone, it symbolizes strength, courage and simultaneously mourning for the dead soldiers. They fought like lions, but ... apparently not strongly used the weapons of his time.

At the foot of the rocks with a lion takes place every summer International Music Festival, one of the most important cultural events in the city.
